By: Diamond Slone Couch, LMFT-A Most couples arrive to their first session with a mix of hope and nervousness — and usually a list of things the other person has been doing wrong. That's normal. Here's what you can actually expect.
Before the Session Before we meet, I'll ask you both to complete a brief intake form. This helps me understand your relationship history, what's bringing you in, and what each of you is hoping for. You don't have to have the same answer - come in honestly. In the First Session The first session is not about airing grievances. It's about me getting to know you — individually and as a couple. We'll talk about:
Common Questions Do we have to talk about our childhoods? Not necessarily. We focus on the present patterns first. History comes up when it's relevant. What if my partner is reluctant? This is common. Many couples find that once sessions feel safe and non-blaming, the reluctant partner relaxes. I pace sessions to match where both people are. How long does couples therapy take? That depends on your goals and where you're starting. Some couples see meaningful shifts in 12–18 sessions. Others work together longer. We'll talk about a realistic timeline during intake. Ready to Start? I offer telehealth couples therapy across North Carolina with evening and weekend availability.
