What Anxiety Looks Like for Black Women — And How Therapy Can Help

Anxiety in Black women often doesn't look like panic attacks or obvious worry. It looks like perfectionism. Overcommitment. Trouble saying no. The constant low hum of 'what if something goes wrong' beneath everything you do. There’s a fear that if you lose control, everything will fall apart.
It can look like being the one who holds it all together — while quietly feeling like you're unraveling.

Why Black Women Carry Anxiety Differently
The mental load Black women carry is real and documented. It includes:
  • Hypervigilance that developed as a reasonable response to real threats — and now won't turn off
  • The racial stress of navigating systems built
  • Generational patterns of having to be 'strong'
  • The weight of being a caregiver for family while not receiving care yourself
None of this is weakness. All of it is workable in therapy.

How Solution-Focused Therapy Helps with Anxiety
My work with individuals uses Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) — an approach that doesn't dwell in problems but instead builds toward solutions. In practice, this means:
  • Identifying what's already working in your life and amplifying it
  • Acknowledging our current supports, strengths, and sources of resilience
  • Setting small, concrete goals that create momentum
  • Building practical coping tools you can use outside of sessions
  • Shifting your relationship to anxious thoughts without years of excavation
For clients dealing with both anxiety and relationship stress, I integrate Emotionally Focused Therapy techniques to help navigate the emotional patterns that keep you stuck.

What Therapy Looks Like with Me
Sessions are telehealth, available evenings and weekends across North Carolina. My approach is warm, structured, and culturally grounded. I will not ask you to explain your Blackness. I will not minimize your stress. I will meet you where you are.
I accept Aetna, BCBS, and UnitedHealthcare. Free 15-minute consultation: 704-251-5105 | fordwilliamsfamilytherapy.com
