Searching for a therapist can feel overwhelming — especially when you're also trying to find someone who understands your cultural background and takes your insurance and aligns with your schedule, etc. Here's a practical guide to finding a Black therapist in North Carolina, including the best directories to search and questions worth asking.

Why Representation in Therapy Matters
The mental health field has historically underserved Black communities — through both access barriers and cultural incompetence. Finding a therapist who reflects your lived experience isn't a luxury. It can be a factor in whether you feel heard and respected to reach your therapeutic goals.
Black clients who see Black therapists report feeling less need to code-switch, more comfort discussing racial stressors, and stronger therapeutic alliances overall.
Best Directories to Find a Black Therapist in NC
  • Therapy for Black Girls (providers.therapyforblackgirls.com) — the most trusted directory for Black women seeking culturally competent care
  • Inclusive Therapists (inclusivetherapists.com) — filters for BIPOC providers
  • Psychology Today (psychologytoday.com) — use filters for 'Black/African American' identity
  • Open Path Collective (https://openpathcollective.org/find-a-therapist/) — sliding scale options if cost is a barrier

Questions to Ask Before You Commit
  • What does your experience working with Black clients look like?
  • How do you approach race and systemic stress in your work?
  • Do you accept my insurance?
  • What are your availability and cancellation policies?
