The Cost of Therapy

Choosing to begin therapy is an investment in your mental health, your relationships, and your long-term well-being. Many people seek therapy during seasons of life when they feel overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain about how to move forward. Having a skilled therapist who can help you slow down, understand what is happening, and develop healthier ways of responding can make a meaningful difference.

At Ford Williams Family Therapy, we aim to make the cost of therapy transparent and predictable so clients can make informed decisions about their care. Our fees are comparable to other therapy providers offering similar levels of clinical training, experience, and quality of care.

Below you will find the fee structure for working with therapists in our practice.

Cost of Therapy with a Fully Licensed LMFT

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) have completed advanced clinical training and independent licensure. Sessions are 55 minutes.
1. Private Pay — Standard Fee
$175 per 55-minute session.
Many clients choose private pay because it allows therapy to remain confidential and flexible without insurance limitations on diagnosis or treatment length.

2. In-Network Insurance Billing
Our practice is currently in-network with many major commercial insurance plans, including:
• Blue Cross Blue Shield (most plans)
• United Healthcare / Optum / UMR
• Aetna
• Cigna

Please note that Ford Williams Family Therapy is not a Medicaid or Medicare provider.
When using insurance, the amount you pay depends on your individual plan benefits, including deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurance.

3. Private Pay with Practice-Funded Financial Assistance
To make therapy more accessible, our practice offers a limited amount of Practice-Funded Financial Assistance based on household income. Eligibility is discussed during the initial phone consultation.
Fee tiers include:
• $135 per 55-minute session for households with income below $120,000
• $115 per 55-minute session for households with income below $70,000

4. Insurance Parity Rate for Out-of-Network Benefits
Clients who have verified out-of-network mental health benefits may qualify for a reduced fee designed to align with typical insurance reimbursement structures.
Fee:
• $115 per 55-minute session
Clients pay the session fee at the time of service and may receive partial reimbursement from their insurance provider depending on their plan.

Cost of Therapy with an Associate Therapist (LMFT-A)

Associate therapists have completed graduate clinical training and are practicing under the supervision of a fully licensed therapist. Sessions are 55 minutes.
Working with an associate therapist can be an excellent option for clients seeking high-quality care at a lower cost.

1. Private Pay — Standard Fee
$150 per 55-minute session.

2. In-Network Insurance Billing
LMFT-A therapists are currently able to bill as in-network providers in the state of NC for some insurance plans:
• Blue Cross Blue Shield (most plans)
• United Healthcare / Optum / UMR
• Aetna

Please note that Ford Williams Family Therapy is not a Medicaid or Medicare provider.
When using insurance, the amount you pay depends on your individual plan benefits, including deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurance.

3. Private Pay with Practice-Funded Financial Assistance
Financial assistance may be available based on household income.
Fee tiers include:
• $120 per 55-minute session for households with income below $120,000
• $100 per 55-minute session for households with income below $70,000
Eligibility is discussed during the consultation process.

3. Insurance Parity Rate for Out-of-Network Benefits
Clients who have verified out-of-network mental health benefits may qualify for a reduced parity fee.
Fee:
• $100 per 55-minute session

Group Therapy Fees

Group therapy fees vary depending on the structure and length of the program. Most therapy groups are offered within the following range:
• $30–$60 per session depending on the group format
• Payment is required at the time of the session

Insurance coverage for group therapy varies by plan. Some insurance providers reimburse for group therapy services, while others do not. Clients interested in using insurance benefits should verify their coverage directly with their insurance provider.

For clients using out-of-network benefits, our practice can provide documentation that may allow partial reimbursement depending on the terms of your plan.

Important Note
Group therapy programs often involve a structured curriculum and limited enrollment. Because of this, registration and payment policies may vary by group. Details about pricing, session schedules, and enrollment requirements will be provided on each therapy group details page.
Payment and Insurance Reimbursement
Clients are responsible for payment at the time of the session. If health insurance is not able to be billed on the date of service / therapy; the default payment method is "private pay".

For clients using out-of-network insurance benefits, our practice provides a detailed receipt (often called a “superbill”) that can be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement. Reimbursement amounts vary depending on your insurance plan and are not guaranteed.

To make this process easier, our practice partners with Reimbursify, a service that assists clients with out-of-network benefit verification and claim submission.

Important Fee Policy
Clients qualify for one fee tier per episode of care. The appropriate fee level will be determined during the consultation process.
Is Therapy Worth the Cost?
Many clients understandably ask whether therapy is worth the financial investment.
Therapy is not simply a place to talk. It is a structured process designed to help individuals, couples, and families develop healthier patterns of communication, emotional awareness, and decision-making.
Over time, this work can lead to:
• stronger relationships
• improved emotional regulation
• better communication skills
• reduced anxiety and stress
• greater clarity during difficult life transitions
For many people, the skills learned in therapy continue to benefit their lives long after sessions have ended.
